Our first Come and See topic this half term is Books. We are thinking about why we love them so much and why they are so special. We will think about the Bible and its different sections and how important it is to the Christian family. We will visit the Church where Father Sean will talk to us about the different books used there.
As writers we will be exploring a variety of writing styles this half term.
There will be a continued focus on grammar, using the correct language e.g. noun, adjective, verb etc.
The children will be encouraged to use adjectives and ambitious vocabulary to improve the quality of their writing. They will also begin to write at greater length.
There will also be an increased emphasis on the correct and consistent use of punctuation in all of their writing.
Spelling is very important and children will need to be able to spell an increasing range of words with accuracy and consistency.
Throughout the week the children will be heard to read individually and in guided reading groups. We will be reading a range of texts – fiction, non-fiction and poetry. They will use their knowledge to work out, predict and check the meanings of unfamiliar words and to make sense of what they have read. They will be developing their comprehension skills in order to answer questions on inference, viewpoints, themes and use of language.
In our phonics sessions we will be working on Phase 6. We will be learning how to add suffixes.
The children will have a ‘spelling quiz’ on Friday.
As mathematicians, the children will be building upon their knowledge of + and – and further extending their understanding of x and ÷. They will be putting their knowledge of different strategies, for example blank number lines and partitioning and recombining into practice, choosing which strategy is the most appropriate to solve a problem. The children will be encouraged to verbally explain how they got their answers.
They will develop their knowledge of 2D and 3D shapes and will sort them according to their properties, e.g. number of sides, edges, vertices and faces.
They will be also learning to tell the time and use standard units of measure in length and weight.
As scientists, the children will be exploring the uses of materials. They will be carrying out their own experiments developing scientific skills of observing, predicting, measuring, fair testing and recording in a variety of ways. We will be exploring different materials and their properties, thinking about why materials are chosen for the jobs that they perform. We will also be looking at materials and how they can change and examining changes over time.
The children will continue to develop their keyboard skills. If you have computer access please encourage your children to practice their skills.
As historians we will be getting our detective hats on & using different sources of information to learn all about Florence Nightingale and the important work she did to change how people were cared for in hospitals. We will also look at the life and work of Mary Seacole and her experiences as a nurse.
We will focus on the children using vocabulary linked to talking about the past.
In music the children will play musical instruments and create musical patterns. They will use their voices expressively by singing songs and performing chants and rhymes.
The children will explore the use of different materials in art. We will use a variety of materials to create collages and think about how to use pencils to create texture and shade in our drawings.
In dance the children will perform dances using simple movement patterns.
In Sycamore Class the children will do PE on Monday and Thursday.
In Lime Class the children will do PE on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The children are expected to read daily.
