03 Oct Year 5 – Trip to the Houses of Parliament
We had an amazing time at the Houses of Parliament! It was a fantastic way to deepen our knowledge and understanding of how democracy has evolved from our work on its origins in Ancient Greece.
It was an incredibly exciting day to be there – the first day following the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the Prime Minister’s proroguing of Parliament. There was a real buzz in the air and we will always remember what an exciting opportunity it was to be present as history was being made.
We had the opportunity to watch in the House of Commons’ viewing gallery, and even saw the Speaker of the House, John Bercow, giving the MP’s a telling off. We had a fantastic workshop on democracy, where we learnt about the emergence and development of our own democratic system; from the Magna Carta, to women’s suffrage, to our current political system. The day ended with a visit from our local MP, Catherine West, who was very impressed by the eloquence and depth of questioning from the children. An amazing, action packed, inspiring day for us all.
